Woodrow Malcolm Nesbitt Sr., 78, husband of Joyce Irwin Nesbitt, died on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, at Prisma Health Richland Hospital.
Born on Nov. 7, 1942, in Sumter, SC, he was a son of the late Woodrow Nathan Nesbitt and Pearl McInnis Nesbitt Turner. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Major, having served three tours during the Vietnam War where he was a Dustoff pilot. After his career in the military, he continued as a helicopter pilot at Savannah River Plant and Memorial Medical Center. He then relocated back to Sumter, where he was a beloved member of the community. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Comforter.
He is survived by his wife of Sumter; five children, Carenn Moore (Hank) of Lexington, Judyth Wylie (Jimmy) of Sumter, Woodrow M. Nesbitt Jr. (Karina) of Waxhaw, Kristi Marie Seal of Sumter and Brandi Kay Seay of Valdosta, Georgia; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Kathy Bishop (David) of Valrico, Florida, and Melanie DuRant (Gene) of Gable; several nieces and nephews; and three cousins he considered brothers, Russell Harrelson, Sammie Harrelson and Dan McInnis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved Maltese, Huey.
A funeral service was held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with Father John Sosnowski officiating. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia.
