It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of LTC Lee Smith, who peacefully departed this life on June 27, 2025. Born on April 12, 1949, Lee was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend who left a deep imprint on the lives of those he touched.
Lee was the devoted husband of Vickie Smith and was a loving father to his children, Dr. Lane Smith and Dr. Lynn Garza. He raised and was the proud father of Vickie’s sons from her first marriage, Michael and TJ Ward. Lee was a caring brother to Michael and Howard Smith, Amy and Tammy Smith, and AJ Harwood. Lee has 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first son, Wilson Lee; father, Howard Harwood; stepfather, Thomas Smith; mother, Letha Haynie; and brother, Howard Smith (by only a few hours).
Lee and his first wife, Linda Brooks, welcomed Lane and Lynn Lee into the world in the early 70’s. Later, Lee would meet his soulmate, Vickie, to whom he was married for over forty years. He welcomed her boys, Mike and TJ, into the family and raised them as his own. He took pride in his son, Mike’s, military service and was always ready to brag about both Lynn Lee and Lane, both of whom had gone on to become doctors. Lee dedicated himself to his beloved wife and all four of his children until the day of his death.
Lee enjoyed the simple pleasures of life – watching Gunsmoke, Tombstone, and Top Gun, walking the dogs, or playing a good game of golf. His greatest attribute was his sense of humor and his infectious laugh. He blessed others with his witty jokes and advice to not take life too seriously.
Lee was not just a loving family man but also a man of professional accomplishments. He graduated from the ROTC program at Abilene Christian University and later went on to earn his Master’s degree. As both a fixed-wing and helicopter pilot in the US Army, Lee achieved the rank of LTC, where he served in Alabama, Texas, Germany, Hawaii, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Kansas. After retiring from the military, Lee was a medevac pilot, taught High School Biology, and was a golf and soccer coach.
Lee’s legacy of generosity, selflessness, charisma, wit, and sense of humor will continue in those blessed to have known him. Rest in peace, Lee. The world was a much better place with you in it, and you are deeply missed.

There will be a private military service held in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
