COL Thomas C. Scofield’s 28-year military career as a DUSTOFF pilot, commander at every level of the AMEDD, and his contributions in key and important staff assignments are immeasurable. During his two tours in Vietnam, he earned four awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with V device for valor and 39 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Soldier’s Medal. He is recognized as one of DUSTOFF’s most heroic pilots. His unparalleled leadership and mentoring were instrumental in creating our DUSTOFF legacy and passing it to future generations. After serving in Vietnam, he successfully commanded the 421st Medical Company in Europe and the 44th Medical Brigade at Fort Bragg. His combat experience proved valuable in preparing his soldiers for their wartime missions. As the Surgeon General’s aviation staff officer, he successfully fought against Army plans to reduce or eliminate DUSTOFF aviation force structure, aircraft, and personnel. He retained and grew the force, modernized it with Black Hawks, and expedited fielding. Tom Scofield was inducted into the DUSTOFF Hall of Fame on 12 May 2012.
