Fred Duncan, life member of DUSTOFF Association since 2003 died of complications of a disease resembling ALS on February 8, 2005. Fred, as a 17-year-old merchant marine, served his country during WW II aboard Liberty Ships with one of the Aviation Repair Units in the South Pacific. His work in his later years brought to light the service of four brave pilots who flew experimental Sikorsky R-4 and R-6 helicopters into the jungles of the Philippines to rescue nearly 70 wounded soldiers. His work brought to light, chronicled, and published some of the earliest efforts in aeromedical evacuation involving helicopters – the very birth of DUSTOFF! He is survived by his wife, Edna, children and grandchildren.
