He never talked about his experience in Vietnam until a few years before he passed away. After one of his crew members (Greg Garcia) got in contact with him, dad opened up a little bit. I know he suffered from PTSD. We have a couple of pictures of him in Vietnam but he never really said who was in them. If anyone remembers serving with him I would love to hear from you. I would like to know more about him. He passed away from lung cancer in December 2011. I really think that his opening up about his experience was therapeutic for him.

Whenever people ask me about flying in Vietnam, I relate the following regarding a mission I was flying as a gunship pilot in the dead of a moonless night over the mountainous terrain west of Chu Lai in 1968. We were covering a DUSTOFF mission (57th) out of Chu Lai (a luxury for them, I suppose, a gunship escort)and I'm listening to the tactical frequency when I hear the DUSTOFF pilot tell the troops he'd turn on his beacon so they could find him on the ground and bring their wounded to him. I'll never forget that. It was over 45 years ago. Those guys had balls.

I've been reading this site for over two hours. Absolutely inspiring.

Message: Despite numerous regulations against just about everything, I did manage a few hours in various DUSTOFF aircraft, mostly the 3rd Plt of the 45th in Vung Tau, compliments of some truly fine aviators, among them Jack Wofford, Bill Covington, Bob Barrett, Jere Foust, Jim Truscott. I do sometime still shudder at the memories of the risks we took just because we could!

I want to thank the Association for sharing so much about the members, past and present, and in particular for leaving the Departed DUSTOFFers list intact, despite its increasing length. I read it through from start to finish each and every time I visit the site simply because I don't ever want to forget even one of these tremendous soldiers. As for many nurses as well as for the soldiers whose lives were saved, I will forever have a warm place in my heart for those of DUSTOFF and I will never be able to hear a Huey fly anywhere close by without stopping and looking up, and remembering when......

Message: The DUSTOFF crew carried many Marines to safety during our tour a decade ago (this year to the days). It was a rough deployment and we lost quite a few. But to see those blades burning at full power into a dangerous LZ to pick up my broken Marine seemed to make everything amazing for that heartbeat of a moment. Knowing that he was in good hands helped take some of the sting away while we carried on our mission. He ended up making it out alive in spite of severe injuries. Were it not for the amazing piloting skills, precision and capabilities, he would definitely not be with us today. Semper Fi, gents! Thank you!

Message: Was senior line medic on DMZ A Co 1/506th Inf. 1989 and unit co-hart then stop-loss and asked 8th army CSM if they had opening for a fast learning RL-zero Flight Medic. Trained at K-16 and then went to Humphries and my cherry mission was unknown craft/crew down on some yama and think we had to call other Plts. to assist due to high casualties. PCS/reenlisted to get Ft. Sam Houston and the system sent me to ground ambulance Co.  But I again went up the chain and pleaded with Post CSM to not loose a soldier who is qualified to be one of the Lonestar Dustoff and loved MAST. Went to Soto Cano for a double tour and then came home to find out we were moving to Hood! Just had a baby and got a job in BAMC ER only if I found a replacement to go to Ft. Hood. The rest is aviation history due to being downsized and not allowed to reup as 91B so I went for infantry and enjoyed sending ammo down range, but wished I was back saving lives in the sky. I have found several familiar names and will contact soon. It was an honor to serve with you all. GODSPEED to the departed crews.

Message: I would like any information that is available on these two 377th Medical Company patches. I am told the first patch is from the 1962 era when the 377th Medical Company was first formed in South Korea, replacing the Medevac Units formed during the Korean War. The second patch is from the 1968 era. I am told that original patch did not have the Dustoff at the top but was added by then-Major Edward Haswell, when he took command of the 377th in February 1968. He and most of his team of the 377th were Vietnam veterans and adopted the use of "DUSTOFF" in the 377th. Even the call sign was changed from "Wallaby" to "Dustoff".

If anyone can verify this information or has any additional information on patches used by the 377th Medical Company, I would appreciate it.
